Building Cultural Humility and Communication Skills with the Latinx Community

This presentation is aimed at increasing cultural humility and building communication skills with the Latinx community among veterinary professionals in the U.S. Currently, Latinx veterinarians make up only 5% of all veterinarians in the United States, which means there are not enough veterinarians that can adequately meet the needs of this growing client population.

Whether you're a small animal practitioner in a predominantly Latinx urban area or a dairy veterinarian working with farmworkers to facilitate herd health, it is crucial to have an understanding of Latinx culture and a basic knowledge of Spanish to better serve this community.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the need for Spanish communication courses in veterinary curriculums to improve cultural humility/competence among veterinarians entering the workforce.

  2. Identify the different systemic barriers the Latinx community has in accessing veterinary care and communicating effectively with veterinarians.

  3. Integrate certain measures into practice to improve quality veterinary care for Latinx clients in clinical practice.
