Building Cultural Humility & Communication Skills with the Latinx Community
For your Spanish-speaking technician(s)/employee(s):
Are they always the go-to for non-English clients?
Are they compensated for this service?
How might they feel being the only Spanish speaker?
What happens when they’re absent?
Native American Experience and Veterinary Medicine
Reflective Exercise
Use the provided resource to find out which Indigenous nation(s) are the original stewards of the land where you currently live.
Once you’ve identified the nation, please take a moment to research it. Share one interesting fact you discovered — this could be about their history, contributions, culture, or something happening in their community today.

Communicating Across Cultures
Reflective Exercise
Reflect on a time, working in the veterinary field, in which you had an internal reaction to a cultural difference.
What did you feel at that moment, and what did you do?
Have you learned anything from this module that could help you to view this event differently?
Is there anything you would do differently if you encounter a similar situation in the future?
Strategies for a Successful Team Culture
Reflective Exercise
Think of a character you love from a book, movie, or TV show. Now write a brief description of this character’s personal story, focusing on their experiences, feelings, and needs.
Imagine this character has arrived in your hospital with an animal seeking treatment. How would their personal story impact the interaction you’d have with them? How could you show them empathy in this moment?
What can you take away from this analysis to apply to your clients?
Unconscious Bias
Reflective Exercise
Reflect on these questions regarding your own biases.
How did you respond when challenged or called out?
What influenced your reaction—emotionally or mentally?
How might your response have impacted others or the environment around you?
Looking back, would you handle it differently now?
What would you tell someone else in that same situation?
LGBTQIA+ & Allyship
Reflective Exercise
An organization makes a post every year acknowledging and celebrating Pride Month. They are very proud to say that they have many LGBTQIA+ employees in the company and that they are proud to highlight those employees. However, on further inspection of the company, their health care does not include any gender affirming services, they have no LGBTQIA+ people in upper-level positions of leadership, and their parental leave is restricted to only being available for maternity leave.
Is this company an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community?
If not, why not?
What ally strategies are they using, or could they use?
Bridging the Gap with Black Veterinary Perspectives
Reflective Exercise
What can you individually and as a hospital team/company do to ensure your support and commitment to the black community within the veterinary community and your customer base?
How can you ensure this support system extends beyond just Black History Month?
Transgender in Vet Med
Reflective Exercise
When is the first time you can remember learning that some people are nonbinary or gender nonconforming?
Where did most of the influence of your initial impressions/understanding of transgender people come from? (ie. family, friends, television, books, news, church, etc…)
How have your impressions/understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community changed or evolved throughout your life?
Psychological Health and Safety
Reflective Exercise
How might your personal stress level affect the interactions you have at work?
What supports do you currently have within your workplace to cope with additional stressors in the workplace?
What supports would you like to see put in place?
